It is the dawn of the Third World War and three women find themselves in a dangerous world as they trek across the Central Valley of California in the wake of a nuclear blast that has destroyed San Francisco.

Three opens not with spectacle but with silence....... the eerie stillness that follows catastrophe. Shortly after a nuclear bomb detonates over San Francisco, Three unfolds across the desolate expanse of California’s Central Valley, where one survivor becomes two, and two become three.
It’s a post-apocalyptic story stripped of the familiar trappings, no zombies, no power-hungry tyrants, no mutant horrors, just people, landscape, and language. Higgins trades chaos for contemplation with the deserted locations and sparse cinematography that amplifies the sense of isolation, while the film’s sharp, often witty dialogue carries both tension and tenderness. Every exchange from the well assembled cast feels weighted with the knowledge of the unknown, what fragile connection still remains, and what the future holds.

A slow burner by design, Three rewards patience with insight. It’s less concerned with the mechanics of survival than with the psychology of it, the uncertainty, the fear, the reluctant intimacy that emerges when the world has apparently fallen away.

The result is a film that lingers long after its final moment. Stark, intelligent, and thought provoking. Higgins turns the end of the world into something deeply human, not a spectacle of ruin, or a zombie fest, but a meditation on the uneasy beauty of what endures.
