Above The Knee
Amir’s life with his beautiful girlfriend looks perfect but in reality, he is harboring a dark secret he knows no one will understand......ever since he can remember he has felt his left leg doesn’t belong to him.
Plagued with visions of a rotting leg that must be amputated, he becomes determined to rid himself of this alien limb, whatever the cost may be.
Above The Knee, which received its UK premiere at this years FrightFest, unfolds as a psychological spiral, deliberately blurring the boundary between reality and delusion.
Constant shifts between sequence and non-sequence immerse the viewer in Amir’s fractured perspective, leaving audiences second-guessing what they are actually witnessing. Director, Bøe, employs sharp cutaway imagery and a carefully constructed soundscape to heighten anticipation, with the audio design in particular playing tricks on the mind, suggesting horrors that may, or may not manifest.
A moody score also underlines the unease, supported by an epic performance from Singh (Amir), which maintains tension even when the narrative slows.
Though methodically paced, the short running time of 76 minutes works in its favor, preventing the concept from wearing too thin. Featuring as a short, rather than a feature length project, the intensity could have made a stronger impact. That said, the final result is an unsettling and atmospheric exercise in body horror, technically assured, especially as already mentioned in sound design, and compelling enough to mark its Director as one to watch, even if this feature stops short of fully realizing its potential.
Above The Knee, an unnerving body horror, maybe improved on if it was a short, with striking sound design and atmosphere that lingers long after the credits.
