The Sonata

​

After the death of her estranged but famous composer father Richard Marlow, young virtuoso violinist Rose inherits his old French mansion. There, she discovers her father’s final work: a mysterious score marked with arcane symbols.

 

With the help of her agent manager she starts deciphering the mystical emblems and slowly unlocks a shocking secret concerning her father’s past.

 

The Sonata is a mysterious thriller that grips you from the outset. The first scenes are shot in a POV style which present a personal and graphic prologue that lays an excellent foundation for the main story.

The account details the death, and the manner of the death of Richard Marlow (Hauer), famous composer and father to Rose (Tingley), who is left to pick up the pieces with the help of her agent (Abkarian).

​

The story centres around a composition discovered by Rose, a new composition that her father was working on with strange symbols within the score that need deciphering, a composition with a hidden agenda and dark and sinister intentions.

Everything about this film oozes class from the cinematography to the film’s score. The acting is above par and the mansion is a lovely setting for the story. A strong plot keeps the filmgoer engrossed throughout with Tingley and Abkarian working well together. It is especially good to see the late great Hauer in one of his latter roles, albeit all too brief.

The Sonata is a very enjoyable movie with a few light scares that is a 

reminder of classic horror/thriller movies that were not about gore, but more about the thrill of the plot.

 

Atmospheric and a classic looking thriller, an epic throwback to vintage horror.
