The best ​straight 8​ films of 2019 screened on May 20th in Cannes and May 26th in London’s Regent Street Cinema. The complete collection of 25 films is now available globally via Vimeo on demand.

Each film is 3 minutes 20 seconds or less because it was filmed on a single cartridge of super 8mm, with no editing allowed. Every shot filmed was taken in story order, once only.

With no theme set, nor any barrier to entry, this 1h25m programme is an important representation of themes and genre coming from emerging filmmaking talent the world over, today.

A truly independent and thoroughly international showcase of grassroots filmmaking, straight 8 prides itself that anybody and everybody is welcome to enter their annual competition. This 2019 selection includes films from eight countries, spanning 16 global cities, with filmmakers from the ages of 19 to 79 and a mixture of newcomers and industry veterans. The rules of straight 8 create a wonderfully level playing field with entrants sending their exposed but unprocessed cartridges of Super 8 celluloid film to be developed and scanned at ​Cinelab London​ while they then make an original soundtrack for their film, without having seen it yet.
 

The straight 8 jury, which this year included BAFTA & Academy Award-winning director ​Asif Kapadia ​(Diego Maradona, Amy, Senna), and Oscar nominated Director of Photography, ​Robbie Ryan​ BSC ISC (The Favourite, I, Daniel Blake, American Honey) selected the best 8 films to screen at the 14th straight 8 Cannes Film Festival premiere. straight 8 is celebrating its 20th anniversary, it’s first ever premiere being held in May 1999. Since then more than 2000 films have been made this way and the word-of-mouth means that new people continue to find out about this unique challenge and mix with regular repeat entrants each year.
